I have been counting my calories for a year come this April and I have been doing very good on my diet. (I’ve lost over 60 pounds and I have just a little bit left to get to my goal weight!) Sadly, I’ve been without soda for over six years, perhaps having a little here and there when I go to a restaurant or if my husband has the urge to purchase it at the store. Even the diet sodas never taste all that great and they have dull flavor.
I was very excited when I found Zevia soda. This soda has no calories or sugar and they use the stevia plant. According to Zevia’s website:
“Stevia is a little green plant from the sunflower family and originally native to South America. The stevia leaf is up to 300x sweeter than sugar but has no caloric value or effect on blood sugar levels.”
I have to first mention the design on the cans which are definitely attractive, the colors go very well with the flavor of the soda. I received a set of six different cans with the flavors which included Dr. Zevia, Cream Soda, Grapefruit Citrus, Cherry Cola, Ginger Root Beer, Lime and Cola. The Dr. Zevia was the first one I opened and let’s just say you can tell it has a different flavor from other sodas you drink. It has the pepper feel of other Dr. Peppers but more of a sweet flavor which could possibly be the stevia that I’m tasting. It does taste just a little bit like a diet soda, but it has a much more satisfying flavor.
Read below on our thoughts on all of the different Zevia flavors!
Cream Soda- Has a distinct taste to it. It tastes pretty much like any other cream sodas out there but this one is just a little sweeter.
Grapefruit Citrus- Is possibly the only one out of the pack that I didn’t like as much. You can taste the grapefruit, beyond a doubt. It honestly tastes like a mixture of a hawaiian punch and tang. It’s not the worst tasting soda but it’s not something I would go back for.
Cherry Cola- So far is my favorite sodas out of the pack. It has a sweet cherry taste and doesn’t taste like it has no calories. In fact, I kind of feel guilty drinking it, but knowing in the back of my mind that it’s actually better for me than actual soda helps get rid of that guilty feeling. It leaves a nice aftertaste on the back of your tongue as well. It’s sweet but with the hint of tang that every soda has. It makes you want more!
Ginger Root Beer- In my opinion is super yummy. You can taste the ginger and though there’s the familiar taste of Root Beer, you can tell there is definitely ginger added to the flavor. I honestly enjoyed this soda much more than the actual root beer that you buy at the store, which is scary for me to say since I LOVE root beer. I think I found my alternative for healthier soda!
Lime Cola- This flavor is definitely not as strong as other lime colas. You can taste the lime, definitely, but it’s not too strong and the aftertaste isn’t bad. I like this one a lot because of the subtle flavor. It doesn’t burn the back of your throat like some sodas and it goes down easy.
The best part out of all of this, I don’t feel guilty about drinking the soda. It’s not bad for my diet and it’s not filled with the bad chemicals that you usually try to avoid when drinking regular soda (though it’s hard to avoid it in that stuff). It almost tastes as though I’m spoiling myself because of how bad soda is for you and Zevia is a healthier alternative!
You can find the Zevia online for $6.29 for a pack of six sodas or you can find them at your local grocery store if you go to their website and type in your zip code in the upper right corner. Zevia also has recipes you can use on their website too! I’ll definitely be trying a recipe in the near future. Connect with Zevia on Facebook and Twitter too.
