When we moved from Ohio to Indiana we lived right behind a lake. It was so peaceful, other than the train that came through every morning but you learn to adjust. One thing that I did not adjust to was the well water. It was a new house and a new well so we always had bits of sand and gravel at the bottom of a glass. And the shower stall would turn orange if we didn’t clean it every week. The iron levels were ridiculously high and I just wasn’t comfortable drinking the water, even filtered.
Moving back to the city was great, since I didn’t have to worry about water (or so I thought). Reading about problems cities have recently had with their water supplies has made me realize that safe drinking water is something I take for granted. I’ve tried to make it a habit of drinking my daily eight glasses of water and so far I’ve been successful. I’ve eliminated pop although I will occasionally have one when I go out to eat but I don’t buy it at the grocery store anymore. Here are some of my tips for bringing water back to your daily routine.
Leave a glass of water on your bedside table. It may seem like a no brainer but I tend to reach several times during the night for something to drink and I’d always forget to have a glass of water on the nightstand. I’m too tired to traipse all the way down to the fridge so I’ve added filling my water bottle to my nightly ‘to do’ list.
Squeeze a lemon in your water. I love flavored water and I’ll cut a whole piece of fruit and leave it in the fridge so I can grab one every time I refill my glass. You can also buy an infuser and put different combinations in your water like basil and cucumber. You get vitamins and your daily allotment of water. It’s a win-win.
Make sure your water tastes good. If you don’t like the flavor of your water, you’re not going to drink it. Trust me. My water by the lake just tasted blah and I wanted no part of it! I never felt truly clean after a shower either and I cringed when I was cooking, even with a filtration system. A simple solution is to have your water tested. I used to only drink water when I was working, but since I was laid off work over two years ago, I never drink water. I worked at a law firm for years and we had a crushed ice machine that also dispensed drinking water. The ice and the water were delicious. I took a couple of water bottles filled with ice water home every night. Someone cleaned the machine once a week. It was the best tasting ice and water I have ever tasted. I only like water if it is very cold. I had to go on Social Security disability because I have not been well. Our city drinking water was recently found to be contaminated with e-coli. I know that bottled water is not (or at least it didn’t used to be) tested or regulated. While some brands taste better than others, I don’t particularly like any of the bottled water. I have tried the faucet filtered and the filtered pitchers and they don’t taste that good either. So, I have been drinking one of the most unhealthy drinks, although very tasty, Mountain Dew. I still like the law firm water better, but it is located in the city next to the one where I live and since I no longer work there, I don’t have access to it. I wish I did. Thanks for the information you provided. I am going to have our water tested.

My tips are to make sure the glass beside the bed has a cover or is in a refillable capped bottle. (Learned this lesson the hard way). I also add flavored magnesium powder to my water (Calm). I always carry a cooler with water in the car and a small bottle in my handbag.
