Did you know that October 3rd is National Walk to School Day?
A couple of facts:
*Beginning in 1997, the United States had their first Walk to School day. It began to promote walkable communities where it was safe for children to walk.
*In 2000 the event became an international day.
*In August 2005, federal legislation established a National Safe Routes to School Program that provided $612 million towards Safe Routes to School from 2005 to 2010.
In a country where obesity in children seem to be on the rise, this is an opportunity to get some exercise.
With just one day of children walking to school and not using buses or other vehicles, can you imagine how good that is for the air pollution?
Jennifer Williams says
I have never heard of this. My sons school is a little too far to walk to, but this is a great idea.
