This year the holidays are bittersweet. I lost my mom unexpectedly earlier in the year and every now and then something will trigger a memory that I sometimes have a hard time dealing with although with time the pain has eased. I’m trying my best to be happy with the kids and we always play games, bake, and of course eat during the holidays! It’s time for us to make new traditions but it’s always great to remember when I was a kid during the holidays and carry those traditions forward.
One of my fondest memories is playing games after we ate dinner or lunch on Thanksgiving (and sometimes before). Every year when I was little I would always head straight for the Simon game. You know the one I’m talking about….it was black and had four colored buttons that lit up and you had to push the sequence. I got pretty good since I was the youngest by 10 years and I never had another kid to play with! After our meal we would play Hawaiian Rummy (you go in rounds and need a set number of runs or books) and eat dessert. I’d never win but it was so much fun being around a table with so many people all laughing and joking. After that it would be late but the adults would want to play Euchre so I usually disappeared and played chess on the computer (if I couldn’t convince them to play a round of Clue).
I’d also convince my mom to have a chocolate Coke and, although it always gave her heartburn, (yes, really) she would always indulge me. Yes, I said chocolate Coke. It was another tradition at grandpa’s to have a chocolate Coke and they were so good. He would always put the chocolate up on the top shelf in the pantry and I’d have to use the grabbers he had to reach because I was so short!
A tradition with my husband’s family is to make a Hummingbird cake during the holidays. This bad boy is so delicious but always gives ME heartburn since it is so rich. (The cake not my husband) This year my sister in law and her kids made the cake and it was yum-o.
Even though this year is going to be very low-key for us we’re still going to be eating a lot of rich food that is so good (but sometimes doesn’t sit well). Did you know Nexium 24HR is available OTC?
