Summer is almost over. Can you believe it’s almost back to school time? It seems the whole month of August is focused on getting the kids back into the school room and in front of the chalkboard. But don’t forget all of the Learning Moments you’ve had with your kids over the summer. Learning Moments are those instances when learning happens away from the chalkboard. Parents share these every day with their children, whether it is answering a simple question or teaching your child how to pronounce a word, do a dance or sing a song. Even routine activities in our daily lives can provide educational opportunities for infants and young children.
What are some fun activites you did with your kids this summer?

Can you tell this is a whale?
This past week we went to the library for summer storytime. It was a perfect day to go since it was raining outside and the kids needed some time out of the house. The kids listened to stories about dogs then they had arts and crafts activities. They got their own bottles of bubbles to blow (yes inside the library) then we went and had fun drawing in shaving cream! I thought Mr. C did a great job drawing a whale.

Brushing the goats
We are members to the Potawami Zoo which is a very small local zoo to South Bend. It is one of the best investments we made for the kids. We actually go several times a week and it’s more than paid for itself. The kids love the animals and we’ve come to know some of the keepers and animals. They love the petting zoo where they can brush the goats.

Mr. Farmer
And last but not least is my son’s garden. This is truly Mr. C’s garden and not mom or dads. Every morning he goes to check on the fruits of his labor and every morning we get a report back. He just genuinely enjoys watching them grow and seeing how nature takes them from seeds to vegetables and fruits you can eat. This week we were able to pick a few tomatoes and he loves them. A lot of kids don’t like tomatoes (I don’t) and I’m glad to see he enjoys eating them.

We’ve had learning moments about manners this summer.

I haven;t done anything this summer. Plain can’t afford to.
I started potty training my 2 year old.
Taking walks in the woods and playing in the creek
I would say teaching my neighbors kids about the ducks and chickens in my yard was a great learning moment.
My brother hiked the entire Appalachian Trail so my kids and I followed his journey on Facebook and using a map. We learned about the trail, lots of states, and then looked at all 3000 of his pictures and heard his stories when he got back. It was a great learning experience for us all!!!
We’ve been taking nature walks through the park this summer.
Potty learning this June.
We went camping.
My grandson learned about vegetables I planted and how to take care of them.
He also learned some things for kindergarten which he will soon start too.
I showed the neighbor kids the geese and ducks i have.
My daughter went on the swings for the first time this summer and loved it.
Well my 9 year old got the “birds and the bees” talk- yikes!
Also took the kids (9 years and 11 months) to the zoo 🙂
We’ve been taking “nature walks” during the summer walking the trails and my kids have loved learning about different trees and flowers.
How fun. I think zoo memberships (regardless of where we all live!) are amazing investments for kids and families!
Learning to respect each others space and propery
I started potty trainning my 18 month old daughter this summer
