I’m pregnant! Those were some of the most memorable words I ever spoke to my husband. And with being pregnant comes a baby name. Or names if you are fortunate enough to expect more than one little bundle of joy! So how do you pick a name out of the thousands out there? Here’s my story of our name game!
With my first pregnancy I really didn’t want to find out the sex but we did. A boy. I felt relieved because I knew of at least one name that he would be and that was Allen. My husband’s family name (middle thankfully) that’s been passed down to the first male for a few decades. The hard part was coming up with a first name. We had it narrowed between Chester (after husband’s dad so we’d call him Chase) or Charles (after my grandpa). My husband didn’t like the idea of having a junior so that was out of the question.
I remember thinking of all the stories my in-laws would tell us about my husband being Calvin from ‘Calvin and Hobbes’. It was always joked that my mother-in-law had really written those stories before they came out in the Sunday paper about her son. I asked my husband, “How about Calvin?” and we just knew. Out the window went our first two choices and I couldn’t have chosen a more fitting name. Each and every day he lives up to his comic book status!
I was genuinely surprised to find out my second baby was a girl. I actually had heartache because I wanted my son to have a brother. I had a list of names and loved Fiona but apparently since Shrek came out it’s not a very popular name! My husband picked the name Caetlin and I decided I wanted it spelled differently since it was so popular. I really was not a fan of that name but he said we’d call her Caety and I was ok with that! I wanted her initials to be the same as Cal’s for some strange reason so we had to have an ‘A’ middle name. Right before I gave birth we chose Alexandra because it was a good strong name and we love the Billy Joel song “The Downeaster Alexa”.
There’s a great website called Belly Ballot which gives you the opportunity to include friends and family in the baby naming process and makes naming your baby more fun! In less than two minutes, parents can choose their five favorite names and invite friends and family to vote via Facebook and Twitter. It would have been nice to have Belly Ballot around when I was pregnant with the first two. What choices do YOU think would go with Cal and Caet for our third baby? (When I get pregnant next time…fooled you didn’t I?)

My first is named Brooklyn Nikole. Brooklyn because we liked it and Nikole because it was my niece who died’s middle name.
My second we decided on names before learning the sex. Boy, Aries Phoenix. Girl, Aurora Phoenix. It was a boy and although its spelled like the zodiac, we actually named him after the god of war (Ares). I absolutely still adore the name Aurora, though! That would be a good “A” name

Oh gosh! Naming was THE hard part! LOL. We absolutely agreed on a girl name (destiny marie, marie from his mom, destiny because I had struggled with infertility for so long) and of course we had a boy! we could not agree at all! He wouldn’t do junior either. I wanted an A name (my family tradition) I ended up with an A middle name. We were remodeling and spent most of my pregnancy in lowes and one day our cashier was Devin and me and my husband were just “Omg That’s it!” Kevin (my husband) with a D! LOL So we finally got Devin Alexander!

I love both of your children’s names. My hubby and I wanted something unique and strong as well. I’m not sure about a third name, I’ll have to get back with you on that one! Your 2 munchkins are adorable!
