Homemade Maple and Brown Sugar Oatmeal

By: Amanda2 Comments

I think oatmeal gets eaten almost every day for breakfast at my house, at least by one person or another. Especially when the weather is cold; however, I also stuff ‘em full of the stuff in the summer before we head to the pool or off to summer camp. I like the idea of my kids having full bellies that will last them until lunch time. And I guess I’m pretty lucky because everybody that lives under my roof seems to gobble the stuff down!

I sat down one afternoon to compile my grocery list and realized that I was going to be buying three boxes of instant, prepackaged oatmeal and thought it was stupid to be spending that much money when I knew I could do it for less. So, once again I hit-up Pinterest and found an extremely simple recipe on Hearts-Hands-Home that I decided to try. It was a hit! We had to make a few minor adjustments to please the kids in the beginning, but now I don’t even think my kids notice a difference! Needless to say, they all love it, including my husband. Everyone also enjoys the fact that they can “mess around” more with the flavors too.

Ready to eat

Yummy oatmeal! My daughter likes hers a little thicker. Add water to your desired consistency.

Homemade Maple and Brown Sugar Oatmeal
Author: Megan
Ingredients
  • 18 oz container of quick oats
  • 1 oz bottle maple flavoring (approx 2 TBSP)
  • 1 ½ cups brown sugar
Instructions
  1. In your food processor, grind 1 ½ cups quick oats until finely ground up.
  2. In a separate smaller bowl combine the flavoring and sugar. I use my hand mixer to make it easier.
  3. In a large bowl, combine the ground oats, the remaining whole oats (approx 4 cups), and the flavor/sugar mix. Stir together (I use a wooden spoon for this).
  4. Store in an airtight container.
  5. To serve:
  6. Put about ½ cup of oatmeal into a bowl.
  7. Heat up about ½ cup water in the microwave for about 1 minute.
  8. Slowly pour water into oatmeal and stir until you get your desired consistency. You may not use all the water
Notes
Sometimes the ½ cup serving is not enough for my husband. You can actually make your servings as big or small as you like, just add your hot water accordingly! We also like to make vanilla oatmeal by substituting vanilla for the maple flavoring. When we eat the vanilla oatmeal, we like to add banana slices or make it apple-cinnamon oatmeal by sprinkling a bit of cinnamon and apple chinks on top. My hubby also likes to eat the vanilla oatmeal with mini chocolate chips stirred in. I try to “pre-package” a couple servings to keep them handy for my eight year old. That way she can make oatmeal by herself on the weekends when Mommy is still asleep or just to have it handy for quick breakfasts or snacks. I just put about ½ cup of the oatmeal mix into sandwich or snack size baggies.

Thanks for sharing this recipe. I love eating oatmeal for breakfast but I have never made it myself.
