Healthy Habits My Family Has During Cold And Flu Season

Luckily, this year we’ve managed to avoid serious illness. (knock on wood) I know nothing is guaranteed to stop us from getting sick but I do try to stay healthy in a few ways. How do we prevent our family from catching colds and the flu?

Washing our hands – It’s probably one of the most important tips you’ve heard your doctor’s tell you. My kids wash their hands for at least a minute with warm water and soap. They go and wash their hands before and after meals and after using the potty.

Disinfect – I go around and clean doorknobs, light switches, toilet handles…just about any place my kids can get and deposit germs.

Vitamins – Taking a vitamin each day can help with your immune system. I currently take prenatals but my OB always recommends taking them even when you’re not pregnant.

Coughing and Sneezing – My kids were taught at an early age to cough and sneeze into their elbow, not their hand, to prevent the spread of germs.

Eating Healthy – We are not a health conscious family. However, I have a motto ‘If I don’t buy it the kids won’t eat it’. I hardly keep fruit snacks or cookies in the house. (the family can eat a bag of Oreos in one sitting) During the winter months we always have apples, bananas, and oranges or veggies that are in season. My kids eat those and yogurt for a lot of snacks.

Get Plenty of Sleep – Yes,  I know. That’s easier said than done. My kids usually get a good night’s sleep. They are early to bed and early to rise.

Fortunately we’ve managed to avoid the flu and besides a stuffy nose every now and then we’ve been lucky. Of course, once I post this something major is bound to happen! We may turn to Children’s Mucinex to help relieve their symptoms.

We use Mucinex and follow a lot of your advice. My husband and daughter seem to get sick every winter, and we try to stock up on Kleenex and OTC medicines. Great tips on the fruit and yogurt. Your lifestyle can really affect your health.

We use Mucinex as well. It’s the best I’ve found for little’s with coughs!
