If you’re kids have been anything like mine, they have been counting down the days until Disney’s Moana hits theaters! There are so many reasons to be excited about this newest movie. Between the strong female lead becoming her own on the sea, instead of a “traditional” princess route, amazing animation and not to mention the Easter Eggs.

A bit about Moana: A daring teenager sets out on a mission to save her people. During her journey, she meets demigod Maui, who guides her in her quest to become a master wayfinder. Together, they sail across the open seas… encountering enormous monsters and impossible odds. Along the way, Moana fulfills the ancient quest of her ancestors and discovers the one thing she has always sought: her own identity.

With Moana on our minds and a snowy day outside, we decided we wanted to turn off all our technology and get creative. I asked my daughter what she wanted to make that would make her think of Disney’s newest heroine, and she practically yelled HER BOAT!

So we decided to get crafty and make our own rendition of Moana’s boat, with some things around the house. Could we have purchased more specific items? Sure, but we sure had fun creating our own. Heck, if we purchase the Moana doll, the packaging that she comes in has instructions to turn the box into a boat for her, how cool is that?! We quickly gathered our supplies (cereal box, a bit of foam, a pipe cleaner, scissors a pencil and glue) and made a plan.

We traced out the bottom and side pieces, cut them out and glues the sides on. We wanted to let the glue set, so we then worked on the sail. My daughter was most excited about this, because she could create her symbol on the sail, just like on Moana’s. We trimmed up a foamy piece to look like a sail, decorated it, then added the pipe cleaner, so we could “set sail” in our little boat. My daughter also pointed out we needed a side piece on the boat that she saw Maui sitting on. A little more cardboard and glue and we had our boat! The best part is that there are so many interpretations that can happen when you let your kiddo decide on what to make and with what items! Have fun.
