My eight year old likes to have her friends spend the night on weekends. This recipe has become the favorite treat for slumber parties at our house! Her friends always ask me to make this! I found this recipe on Rhodesbread.com while I was hunting for coupons one afternoon. I made a couple small changes to suit my family and have since shared it with everyone and haven’t heard one complaint!!
- 1 frozen pizza dough, thawed
- 6 oz of spaghetti
- ½ lb ground beef or Italian sausage
- 1 cup spaghetti sauce, homemade or jarred
- 8 oz mozzarella cheese, cut into small cubes
- Parmesan cheese
- Garlic powder
- Preheat your oven to 350.
- Roll out your thawed pizza dough into a rectangle, approx 12×16 inches. I lay out parchment paper and do it on there, this is also handy for a future step, or you can also spray your countertop with cooking spray and do it that way. Once rolled out, cover with a piece of plastic wrap and let it rest. (If your dough keeps springing back to its smaller size, take a break, cover it with plastic and let it rest for a few minutes and go back to it. I have found letting the dough come to room temperature before rolling out works best for me.)
- Cook spaghetti according to package directions. Once done, drain and set aside for a minute.
- In a separate pan, brown ground beef or cook up the Italian sausage. Drain any fat and then mix with the spaghetti sauce.
- Add spaghetti to sauce mixture and combine well.
- Uncover dough and place spaghetti and sauce mixture in a strip lengthwise down the center of the dough, leaving about 3 inches of dough on either side.
- Top with cheese cubes.
- Make cuts about 1 ½ inches apart along the sides of the dough. Do not take the cuts to the spaghetti, leave at least ½ inch from the filling.
- Begin braiding the strips by first folding in the top strip then criss-crossing the strips to the middle. Tuck in the bottom.
- Transfer the parchment paper onto a baking/cookie sheet. If you did not use parchment paper, carefully lift the roll with both hands and move to a baking/cookie sheet that has been sprayed with cooking spray. (This can be very messy, hence why I prefer using the parchment paper!)
- Sprinkle with parmesan cheese and garlic powder.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes until a nice golden brown.
- Once done, let it cool slightly and slice to serve.
