Shelf Stable Milk Is A Great Alternative To Sports Drinks After Practice! #MilkUnleashed

By: Amandacomment

This is a sponsored post through Milk Unleashed from The Motherhood. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

My son is four and  participated on his first sports team, the Mets. (Much to our chagrin since we are Braves fans!) We had T-Ball through the park district this summer and boy was it fun! He had a blast. He would always come running in between innings for his water bottle, which a lot of the time I filled with Gatorade. Now that I think about it and look at my stockpile of Gatorade, it’s not really that healthy or good for him to have after practice. It really has a lot of sugar in it. I had no clue a great alternative would be chocolate milk! I participated in a Shelf Safe Milk campaign and learned a lot about those cartons that seem to be lonely on the grocery store shelves!

What is shelf safe milk?

It’s actually just regular milk ultra pasteurized so it doesn’t have to be refrigerated! Ultra Pasteurized just means heated at a higher temperature (UHT or ultra high temperature) for less time. This ensures nutrition and taste stay the same and the milk can be stored for 6-9 months on the shelf! These would be great for your emergency kits as well.milk

But what do they put the milk in after it’s pasteurized?

A Tetra Pak shelf-safe carton. You may have bought broth or juice drink that come in the same cartons! These cartons are made from paperboard, polyethylene, and a thin layer of aluminum foil. Tetra Pak is also good for the environment and uses 70% paper from selectively harvested, re-grown trees.

Is it still as nutritious as regular milk?

You betchya! Just like regular milk, shelf safe milk builds strong bones, lowers blood pressure, reduces the rate of cancer and diabetes. Did you know the nutrients in milk are high compared to the calories? Research has shown that kids who drink regular or flavored milk consume more nutrients but have the same or lower BMI than those that do not.

What are some of the benefits to drinking shelf-safe milk?

It’s convenient! You can take it anywhere. Put it in the freezer overnight then put it in your child’s lunchbox or put it in your bag for your play date at the park. It is very versatile.

You can use them for DIY projects.

Researches say they are now the acceptable recovery drink after sporting practice and events!

Never run out of milk again! You can keep it in your pantry or emergency kit.

So where can you buy shelf safe milk? Just about anywhere! You can find it in the refrigerated section or on the shelf depending on what store you shop. Amazon may also carry the brand you are look for too. Unfortunately, I went to my local Target to buy some and they did not carry it. I was a little disappointed since I didn’t have time to go to Kroger, where I’ve seen it before! If this happens to you fill out this form to request your store carry shelf safe milk.
