Create Beautiful Projects With Fiber Of My Being!

Love animals? I’m pretty sure we all do. Especially those who have been rescued and well cared for, where their fibers are used to create beautiful projects. No animals are harmed since Brandi, the amazing owner of the Farm, has taken them in and cared for them. Brandi’s story is very heartfelt, and it definitely captured my attention. When I received the beautiful two skeins of yarn they were packaged so beautifully, in a lovely blue box with an adorable postcard of one of the animals on her farm. I didn’t get the chance to work with these skeins, however my mother and my mother-in-law were the lucky two who got to use them and create amazing works of art.

The first skein was reviewed by my mother-in-law, which is a hand spun recycled Silk-ee containing corriedale wool, recycled silk thrums and fire star which she hand-dyed carded and spun into 270 yards of 2ply.

I had the chance to feel this skein and it’s incredibly soft, beautifully spun and dyed. Below is her thoughts on this beautiful product.

“The yarn is soft and holds a beautiful weave, as well as an amazing texture. The consistency and texture of the yarn made it possible to weave a tight or loose texture, all the while showing it’s brilliant color. The color was beautifully hand dyed and is a lovely blend of magenta, pink, purple and touches of silver sparkle. I absolutely love the way it looks in the light, or even when I move it. It’s also bright without being garish. Most importantly the wool blend is not itchy on your skin, and would be beautiful made into a sweater, or a anything honestly. I was definitely amazed that it was much softer than what you would expect wool to be, so I fell in love instantly. Wonderful yarn, I wouldn’t mind working with it whenever I get the chance.”

I was able to see her weave this yarn and it not only looked easy, but it was super soft and gentle on the skin. I almost begged her to make me a scarf, but I was nice to let her make something for herself. She did of course review it!

The second skein is pulled silk (recycled), dyed in Brandi’s poppy colorway, 90-100 yards. My mother reviewed this one and made a washcloth and a partially knitted scarf, which she is still working on. So far, it’s absolutely gorgeous and soft against the skin. It was obvious she was very pleased with it, having been knitting for so many years.

“The yarn is a beautiful color, dyed with an artistic hand which stands out very well, however would stand out even better with certain patterns. The colors are very warm, and pleasing to the eye. I enjoyed working with the yarn, especially when I was making the scarf, which has not been completed yet. If I had more of this yarn I would make multiple patterns just to see how they help the colors pop, and do it justice.

In order to make the washcloth and scarf I used a size 11 needle, which may have been too large. I have a feeling a size 3 or 4 small needle would help knit a tighter pattern and help the yarn keep it’s shape, since the large needles caused it to pull too easily. The yarn has quite a bit of stretch and movement to it, and since I was doing a butterfly pattern, one little tug from my granddaughter and it had pulled the design just a little bit. Another reason to use smaller needles to help keep that from happening. Once the washcloth was made I figured having a heavier yarn would be better if I decided to make a sweater, however this was excellent for a scarf pattern, which is what the butterfly pattern is in the one photo. I definitely thank the animals for providing the fiber, and what beautiful fiber they made!”

Just a note, the recycled silk yarn is made in India, and it helps impoverished women over there to support themselves, as they are compensated fairly for spinning it. Brandi hand dyes the yarn herself, and as you can see she does an absolutely amazing job.
