I think oatmeal gets eaten almost every day for breakfast at my house, at least by one person or another. Especially when the weather is cold; however, I also stuff ‘em full of the stuff in the summer before we head to the pool or off to summer camp. I like the idea of my kids having full bellies that will last them until lunch time. And I guess I’m pretty lucky because everybody that lives under my roof seems to gobble the stuff down!
I sat down one afternoon to compile my grocery list and realized that I was going to be buying three boxes of instant, prepackaged oatmeal and thought it was stupid to be spending that much money when I knew I could do it for less. So, once again I hit-up Pinterest and found an extremely simple recipe on Hearts-Hands-Home that I decided to try. It was a hit! We had to make a few minor adjustments to please the kids in the beginning, but now I don’t even think my kids notice a difference! Needless to say, they all love it, including my husband. Everyone also enjoys the fact that they can “mess around” more with the flavors too.
- 18 oz container of quick oats
- 1 oz bottle maple flavoring (approx 2 TBSP)
- 1 ½ cups brown sugar
- In your food processor, grind 1 ½ cups quick oats until finely ground up.
- In a separate smaller bowl combine the flavoring and sugar. I use my hand mixer to make it easier.
- In a large bowl, combine the ground oats, the remaining whole oats (approx 4 cups), and the flavor/sugar mix. Stir together (I use a wooden spoon for this).
- Store in an airtight container.
- To serve:
- Put about ½ cup of oatmeal into a bowl.
- Heat up about ½ cup water in the microwave for about 1 minute.
- Slowly pour water into oatmeal and stir until you get your desired consistency. You may not use all the water
