Simple Semi-Homemade Sugar Cookie And Frosting Recipe

By: Amanda46 Comments

On the TWELFTH day of Christmas, The Kids Did It brought to you …Sugar Cookies! We know it’s less than two weeks and Christmas and we also know that you may not have a lot of time to spend hours in the kitchen baking. I love semi-homemade cooking and so does Sandra Lee! These super easy sugar cookies let you use store bought cookies but uses a homemade icing. If you’d like to bake your own try Olivia’s recipe for Spiced Sugar Cookies!

There is no exact science to this recipe. No exact measurements. that being said it is pretty fool-proof. I’ve made this dozens of times and it’s always been delicious!

Ingredients:
  • 2-3 dozed sugar cookies, any kind you like, completely cooled
  • 4 tablespoons (half a stick) butter or margarine, melted
  • 1-2 tablespoons pure vanilla extract (imitation can be used, but the flavor is better with the real thing)
  • 2lb bag of powdered sugar (you probably won’t use the entire bag)
  • 1-2 tablespoons milk
  • food coloring (optional)
Instructions:
  1. In a microwave-safe bowl, melt your butter.
  2. Once melted, add vanilla. I usually just dump some in straight from the bottle, but a good guess-timation would be about two tablespoons. It will turn your butter a golden brown, that should be plenty! Gently whisk together.
  3. Start adding the powdered sugar by the quarter cup.
  4. Continue adding sugar and whisking together.
  5. Once it starts getting thick add milk, a tablespoon at a time. This will also smooth the icing out.
  6. Continue adding sugar and whisking until you get a consistency similar to toothpaste. You should have a lovely golden off-white color.
  7. Add a few drops of food coloring, if you like. Whisk until combined.
  8. Generously frost each cookie.

Notes:
This frosting does not get hard, like royal icing, but it does get stiff. I recommend using wax paper in between layers of cookies when storing them in an air-tight containers. Have fun with the frosting! We often separate the icing and color it a few different colors to make the cookies look like Easter eggs, or Christmas ornaments. We have also done Easter chicks, Shamrocks, hearts, balloons and monsters. It’s also fun to use to decorate gingerbread kids, or any other cut out you can think of! You can also easily double (or triple) this recipe for any amount of cookies you need to ice.

I had no idea that there were so many different cookie cutters! It’s Easter time soon and I was looking for a yummy cookie recipe when I found this one. The word homemade caught my attention, because I like to make homemade food especially for the holidays. I know these cookies will be a yummy hit! My grandkids love frosting & like the recipe says – I will be applying a generous amount of it on each cookie šŸŖThis recipe was pin worthy. Thank you for sharing and have a blessed holiday!!
