Even though we’re in the throes of spring, Northeast Ohio still likes to play games and have 30-degree temperature mood swings. For those of you in more even climates, please imagine with me. When you wake up in the morning, you have to get your children and yourself ready for a multiple season day, meaning dress in layers and be prepared to change! This past week, for example, the mornings have been low forties and by the afternoon, in the high seventies. We joke that we use the heat and air conditioning on in the same day. So naturally, it’s hard to “Think Spring” some mornings. So we turn to crafts, games, and toys to help us get and stay in the spring mood.
These are a few of our newest favorites:
Beautiful butterflies dance over the meadow in HABA’s Wooden Puzzle Butterfly Magic. Individual puzzle pieces are nested on top of each other into the puzzle board recesses to train fine motor skills while having fun. We have loved learning to put the pieces in size order, but also, putting one of the larger pieces on and playing with the sweet butterflies.
Sort, Match, and Stack with the Shape Sorting Flower Puzzle from Playgro. Encourage your baby to recognize various shapes and their sizes, this practices trial and error, mental prediction and problem-solving. The cute flower acts as a central part of this 22 piece sorting puzzle, perfect for the inquisitive mind. Even the shape “stems” come out of this colorful puzzle, making it even more fun to put back together.
The GeoSafari® Jr. Bug Vac ‘n’ View™ is an all-in-one bug vac packed with all the tools little explorers need to collect bugs in their natural habitat and view the fascinating insects up close. Features include an easy-carry handle, 2 Critter collection chambers with air holes and magnifiers, and a bug booklet for even more fun discoveries. Encourages outdoor exploration. Although the only bugs we’ve successfully captured have been ants and a stink bug (if you’re not familiar, you’re lucky) it’s been fun to collect and watch.
Do you have favorite toys or games that get you in the springtime mood?
