Making Scrabble Fun For Kids Of All Ages!

Do you love a good game of Scrabble? My husband and I sure do! We’ve been playing since we first met and we love a good friendly competition. We take our gaming seriously and were excited to play the new game with power tiles. We are always up for an exciting twist to a classic game. I remember playing with him the first time we went down to Mississippi for a family visit. There was no tv or computers so to entertain ourselves we dug out the old Scrabble board. I’m not sure who won back then but it was probably me!

Instead of playing with my husband this time around, I decided to play with my five and three year old. Yes, I know the recommended age is eight but incorporating learning the alphabet while helping mom do a review is a bonus in my book. We first started by actually playing. No he can’t spell but we had fun coming up with words and he’d help me try to spell them anyways. Below is what we came up with.

Next he was trying to come up with words on his own after he’d choose some tiles. ‘Mom what does this spell?’ We decided he was making up his own language since his letters were duds!

Finally, he decided to find all the letters and put them in a row on the tile holders. He and his sister started at ‘A’ and were both doing the alphabet and phonics song. ‘The ‘A’ says ‘AH’ the ‘A’ says ‘AH’ every letter makes a sound, the ‘A’ says ‘AH’. It’s very endearing to watch your kids help each other and for the older kids to teach the younger new songs.

I think I have a budding Scrabble champion in the making! Does your family enjoy playing games? Do you ever let your kids play an adult game and rework the rules?

Because of the educational benefits of using SCRABBLE in the classroom, Hasbro has teamed up with teachers and community leaders to create School SCRABBLE Clubs. Designed for kids in 4th through 8th grades, School SCRABBLE Clubs can be established in the classroom, as an after-school club or through other community organizations, such as a library. Kids play in pairs, making it even more fun when they play high value letters on a triple word score! High fives for everyone!

Students from grades fourth through eighth to register for the School Scrabble Championship! On April 26-27, 2014 teams from the US and Canada will meet to compete. The first prize winner will receive $10,000! If your school has a team that would like to join please visit School Scrabble for more information.
