Are you in need of extra money? I am. One place to start saving is your home and by making it energy-efficient you can save some money to help pay your other bills. I own and rent a house. We moved out of state when the economy took a slump and our house would not sell. We were able to rent it out however that forced us to become renters again since we could not manage two mortgages. Regardless if you rent or own a home, there are several ways you can start being energy-efficient without too much effort!
Here’s a few tips for a smart home to help you start saving money and become energy-efficient:
Use the microwave to heat up a cup of tea.
I was watching a program on TV the other day and using the stove to heat tea kettle is less energy-efficient when the microwave is designed to use direct heat on the item placed inside. I never thought of it in terms of saving money!
Buy a Smart TV.
Watching an LED smart TV would be more energy-efficient than having an older tube TV or a Plasma.
Ask your landlord to replace older appliances with new Energy Star appliances that run efficiently.
Install a smart thermostat, such as the Nest Learning Thermostat.
Smart thermostats offer you climate control, the convenience of programming away from home, and more.
Switch out your old light bulbs for energy-efficient lighting.
Your living room typically has multiple active light sources available. Use CFLs or LEDs.
Replace the showerhead in your bathrooms with low flow showerheads.
These showerheads regulate the flow of water, assuring you a more efficient shower. Just keep the old showerhead for when you leave your rental unit so you don’t have to buy another low flow.
Have a strong Wi-fi signal from your smart thermostat and smart devices.
You can remotely control your smart thermostat via the internet, periodically check the signal strength in the network settings on the thermostat’s control screen.
